The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced the launching of a pilot scholarship program designed to recruit students enrolled in veterinary schools to “critical” Public Health Veterinarian (PHV) positions in the Agency.  The two-year pilot program will operate under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Pathways Program, and will select the first group of scholars in this summer.  Students who complete the requirements of the USDA Pathways program, and meet the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree requirements, may begin their career as a PHV.  Students covered by the scholarship agree to become permanent FSIS employees for at least one year for each school year covered, or will be required to refund FSIS for their financial assistance.

The scholarship is named after Dr. Adel A. Malak in honor of his service and time in FSIS.  Dr. Malak began his career as an in-plant Public Health Veterinarian with FSIS, and progressed to later become the deputy district manager of the Alameda, California district office.  Dr. Malak additionally mentored and recruited students from the University of Fresno and California Polytechnic State University.
