The city council in Fremont, Nebraska has approved a motion to offer $1.35 million in incentives for Costco Wholesale Corporation and Lincoln Premium Poultry to construct a poultry plant there. The city council unanimously voted in favor of the incentives by a 7-0 vote on January 10.
The proposed plant, which the companies hope to open by March 2019, would be operated by Lincoln Premium Poultry, and would process chicken products to be exclusively sold in Costco stores.
The poultry plant has been a major topic of discussion for the council, which in December approved modified plans for the facility, which would cover an area of 360,000 square feet. The plans also called for a hatchery to cover 85,000 square feet. In addition to employing an estimated 1,100 people, the proposed plant is also expected to offer opportunities for 50 to 75 contract poultry growers.
