According to the Department of Labor’s (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the all-items index increased by 2.9 percent year-over-year.
The all-items index without food rose 3.2 percent over the past year. During that same period, the energy index decreased by 0.5 percent, and the food index increased by 2.5 percent.
The index changed significantly between November and December. The energy index rose 2.6 percent in December alone, accounting for over 40 percent of the monthly increase. The index for food increased in December as well, rising 0.3 percent for the food-at-home and food-away-from-home indexes. In December, the indexes that increased in value included shelter, airfare, used vehicles, new vehicles, vehicle insurance, and medical care. The indexes that decreased during that time were personal care, communication, and alcoholic beverages.
The poultry index increased by one percent over the year and 0.1 percent from last month. For chicken specifically, the index rose 1.2 percent over the year and 0.3 percent from November to December. Whole chicken rose 0.9 percent on the year, but decreased 0.2 percent over the month. Fresh and frozen chicken parts rose 1.2 percent for the year, mirroring the total chicken index, and rose 0.6 percent from November to December.
