The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Stephen Vaden to serve as USDA deputy secretary in a 51-44 vote. He will oversee agency’s day-to-day operations and consult Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins.

Vaden, a judge on the U.S. Court of International Trade, was USDA’s general counsel during Trump’s first administration and a member of the board of the agency’s Commodity Credit Corporation. Clarkson served as USDA’s deputy general counsel in the first Trump administration and previously worked in Trump’s first Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. He most recently was vice president and deputy general counsel at Ginkgo Bioworks, a biotechnology company.
