President Trump on Thursday nominated Dr. Julie Callahan, currently the Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Agricultural Affairs and Commodity Policy, to the position of Chief Agricultural Negotiator.
In her current role, Dr. Callahan oversees the U.S. Trade Representative’s (USTR) work to promote agricultural trade policy, including reducing tariff and nontariff barriers to U.S. agricultural exports, negotiating and implementing free trade agreements, and U.S. engagement with the World Trade Organization and other multilateral organizations.
She previously served as Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative and Senior Director in the USTR Agriculture Office. Before USTR, Dr. Callahan held positions in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service, and the American Chemical Society. She received her doctoral degree in Marine Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts and a Bachelor of Science in Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The current Chief Agricultural Negotiator is Doug McKalip of Pennsylvania.
