Virginia Poultry Federation (VPF) is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding in 1925 with a festival at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 13, 2025. Open to the public with free admission, attendees will enjoy live music from Jack and Davis Reid, games for kids, fair-type food options for purchase, and educational displays.
On August 19, 1925, 187 agricultural leaders and poultry producers from across the Commonwealth organized the original federation during a poultry field day at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia. Today, VPF is the statewide trade association representing all sectors of the poultry community, including poultry and egg farmers and businesses that operate processing plants, feed mills, hatcheries, and other operations.
VPF president Hobey Bauhan stated, “As we celebrate this milestone, each member of our poultry community can take pride in feeding the world using science and technology developed over the past century.” Thanks to commercialization of scientific research, the feed conversion for broiler chickens in the United States has gone from five to less than two. Turkey has made similar gains. “This is just one of many advancements that enhance our environmental sustainability and ability to provide healthy protein for a growing population,” commented Bauhan.
During the festival, Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Matt Lohr will present a proclamation from Governor Glenn Youngkin regarding the VPF’s anniversary. Additionally, Virginia Delegate Chris Runion will present a commending resolution passed by the General Assembly earlier this year.
