Aaron Kiess, Braswell Distinguished Professor in NC State University’s Prestage Department of Poultry Science, took the helm as interim department head effective Jan. 2. Prior to joining NC State in 2021, Kiess spent 13 years as a faculty member in the Department of Poultry Science at Mississippi State University, where he worked with poultry companies to address pre- and post-harvest food safety issues.

“Dr. Kiess brings significant institutional knowledge and a deep understanding of college operations to this leadership role,” says CALS Dean Garey Fox. “His strong relationships with our industry and commodity groups ensure that the department remains a vital partner to the poultry industry during this period of transition.”

Kiess’ research runs the gamut from poultry nutrition to farming practices. Recently, he worked alongside Allison Pullen, an assistant professor of animal welfare in the poultry science department, to identify genetic strains of chickens that are better adapted for a cage-free environment. In 2025, he also began working with the Office of the Dean as director of strategic projects to enhance connectivity and collaboration across the college.

Kiess earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in animal and veterinary science from West Virginia University before earning his Ph.D. in genetics and developmental biology from West Virginia.

“I am honored to support the Prestage Department of Poultry Science during this transition,” Kiess says. “As poultry science evolves through research innovation and emerging technologies, we are dedicated to ensuring the department’s faculty and students are well-positioned for continued impact.”

Frank Siewerdt, who served as department head since 2023, stepped down Jan. 1. A national search process has been initiated, with the formation of a search committee.
