The State Department this week announced it is suspending visa processing for applicants from 75 countries beginning on January 21.

The suspension does not impact U.S. visitor visas, used for tourism, nor does it revoke any current, valid visas.

The State Department also said it is conducting a “full review” of all policies, regulations, and guidance regarding visas applications and has notified all U.S. embassies.

“The State Department will use its long-standing authority to deem ineligible potential immigrants who would become a public charge on the United States and exploit the generosity of the American people,” State Department pricipal deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott said. “Immigrant visa processing from these 75 countries will be paused while the State Department reassesses immigration processing procedures to prevent the entry of foreign nationals who would take welfare and public benefits.”
