House Agriculture Committee Chairman GT Thompson (R-PA) this week said the committee plans to take up the next Farm Bill in committee from February 23-25.

The committee has not yet announced a formal hearing or markup, but Rep. Thompson announced the dates to Agri-Pulse.

Many of the traditional elements of a Farm Bill were included in the One Big Beautiful Bill, passed last summer. This included a doubling of annual funding for the Market Access Program (MAP) and Foreign Market Development (FMD) program.

However, outstanding elements and policy issues remain. Chairman Thompson has said the next iteration of the Farm Bill ought to address federal preemption for pesticide lawsuits as well as California’s Proposition 12, which impacts animal welfare for hog producers.

Chairman Thompson has not yet released text in advance of the committee hearing, but has indicated that many of the priorities expressed in his Farm Bill legislation released in 2024 will be included in the next Farm Bill iteration.
