House Republicans are expected to release Farm Bill text today, with the goal of conducting a markup later this month.
House Agriculture Committee Chairman GT Thompson (R-PA) has said the committee will release the text of an updated Farm Bill, following the committee’s release of an initial bill in 2024. The 2026 version is expected to look similar to the previous offering, with changes made to accommodate farm provisions that were included in last summer’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
That legislation addressed a significant portion of the Farm Bill’s provisions for row crops, including crop insurance, reference prices, and other provisions. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act also doubled authorized funding for USDA’s trade promotion programs, including the Market Access Program (MAP) and Foreign Market Development (FMD) program.
Chairman Thompson said the committee plans to hold a markup on the bill starting on February 23.
House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Angie Craig (D-MN) said the bill is a nonstarter and that it would be “very difficult, if not impossible,” for her to support the legislation. “This is not a good-faith negotiation in my mind, and that’s the message that I’ve given to my members as we go into this markup,” Ranking Member Craig said.
“If they want somebody in Minnesota who isn’t going to stand up to the administration on tariffs, I’m the wrong person, because I’m going to stand up and tell the truth about what I think at every turn. I’m the ranking member of the House Ag Committee, I cannot be concerned about my own politics in leading the caucus forward here.”
Rep. Craig has announced she is running for the open Senate seat in Minnesota, vacated by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), who is running for governor following the retirement announcement of Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN).
Ranking Member Craig recently introduced a bill to provide relief for farmers facing low commodity prices, but has not introduced a competing version of a full Farm Bill.
The Senate Agriculture Committee has also not introduced any Farm Bill text.
