President Trump yesterday posted on social media that Kristi Noem would depart the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) effective March 31, ending her 13-month tenure leading the department. He said that she would take a role as a special envoy for the Shield of the Americas, which he said would be a new security initiative for the Western Hemisphere. Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin will be nominated to lead DHS. The change marked the first time the president has replaced a cabinet member during his second term.

U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin
Mullin started his political career in 2012 as a congressman representing the state’s second district in eastern Oklahoma. He became a senator in 2022 when he won a special election to fill retiring Sen. James Inhofe’s seat.
“Serving 10 years in the United States House of Representatives, and 3 in the Senate, Markwayne has done a tremendous job representing the wonderful People of Oklahoma, where I won all 77 out of 77 Counties – in 2016, 2020, and 2024! A MAGA Warrior, and former undefeated professional MMA fighter, Markwayne truly gets along well with people, and knows the Wisdom and Courage required to Advance our America First Agenda. As the only Native American in the Senate, Markwayne is a fantastic advocate for our incredible Tribal Communities. Markwayne will work tirelessly to Keep our Border Secure, Stop Migrant Crime, Murderers, and other Criminals from illegally entering our country, End the Scourge of Illegal Drugs and, MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN. Markwayne will make a spectacular Secretary of Homeland Security. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The abrupt change comes as DHS is in the third week of a shutdown, with Democrats refusing to approve more funds without new curbs on immigration enforcement agents.
In a statement posted to social media, Mullin said serving Oklahoma in Congress “has been the greatest honor and privilege,” and he expressed appreciation for the nomination.
“President Trump ran on restoring law and order, and he quickly delivered the most secure U.S. border in American history. I look forward to supporting @POTUS’ mission to safeguard the American people and defend the homeland,” Mullin said.
Mullin will need to appear before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, and will need to be confirmed by the Senate. Oklahoma law says the governor will pick a replacement to serve through Jan. 2027.
