This week the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) published an advanced copy of the long-expected “Salmonella Framework for Raw Poultry Products” proposed rule. NCC expressed serious concerns in a follow-up statement.

USDA’s Salmonella Framework for Raw Poultry Products proposed rule, which has not yet been formally published in the Federal Register, would dramatically change USDA’s historic view on the regulation of Salmonella in poultry products.

USDA granted stakeholders just 60 days to analyze and comment on the proposed rule, which will begin as soon as it is published in the Federal Register.

In response, the National Chicken Council released the following statement:

Attributable to Ashley Peterson, Ph.D., NCC senior vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs:

“We support changes in food safety regulations that are based on sound science, robust data, and are demonstrated to positively impact public health. We are concerned this proposal is not based on any of those. It also has the potential to significantly raise the price of chicken at a time when Americans are dealing with inflation in every part of their lives. We remain committed to further reducing Salmonella and look forward to reviewing the full proposal and providing comment on this significant, potential shift in regulatory policy.”
