USDA’s February 2025 Poultry Slaughter report revealed that poultry certified wholesome in January 2025 (ready-to-cook weight) totaled 4.61 billion pounds, representing an increase of one percent from January 2024.

In January 2025, the preliminary total live weight of all federally inspected poultry reached 6.09 billion pounds, marking a one percent increase from 6.00 billion pounds in January 2024. Young chickens accounted for 5.48 billion pounds, representing a two percent rise compared to the previous year. Additionally, mature chickens weighed in at 70.6 million pounds, up three percent from the previous January.

Young chickens slaughtered during January 2025 averaged 6.65 pounds per bird, up one percent from January 2024. The average live weight of mature chickens was 6.95 pounds per bird, unchanged from a year ago.

The total ante-mortem condemnations amounted to 14.7 million pounds. This represented 0.24 percent of the live weight inspected, a slight decrease from 0.25 percent the previous year. Post-mortem condemnations reached 28.3 million pounds, accounting for 0.61 percent of the quantities inspected, compared to 0.62 percent a year earlier.
