Tyson Foods has moved up more than 50 spots in the Newsweek Green Rankings, reflecting the company’s environmental and transparency efforts, according to a company news release.  Tyson Foods ranked 328th out of the 500 companies in the 2016 rankings, compared to 381st  last year.

Amid reports this week that Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) and ranking member Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) were meeting to discuss a compromise on the labeling of genetically modified food, the Coalition for a Safe Affordable Food Supply and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture this week called on lawmakers to make a deal so that the Vermont’s mandatory GMO labeling law, the first in the nation, does not go into effect on July 1, 2016.

Global Food Prices Rose 2.1 Percent in May

Global food prices rose 2.1 percent in May, the fourth straight monthly increase, but stayed approximately 7 percent below 2015 levels, according to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).  FAO also said that food commodity markets are on a stable path for the year ahead, with solid production prospects and abundant stocks pointing to broadly stable prices and supplies.

Visits to restaurants are increasing minimally quarter-after-quarter, resulting in an average lift in traffic of one percent annually, according to The NPD Group.  The restaurant industry has been conducting business in a one-percent world since 2010 and will continue at the same pace for several more years, said NPD, based on their ongoing foodservice market research.
