Rosalind Brewer is stepping down as chief executive officer of Walmart’s Sam’s Club unit, effective February 1, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. John Furner, who has been appointed Walmart executive vice president and Sam’s Club president and CEO, will replace her. Furner is currently Sam’s Club executive vice president and chief merchandising officer.

Furner previously served in a variety of roles in the company, including senior vice president and chief merchandising officer of Walmart China from January 2013 to October 2015. He also served as senior vice president, home & apparel and global sourcing and senior vice president, proprietary brands and merchandising solutions.

Furner joined Walmart as an hourly store associate in 1993 and served in a variety of roles including store manager, district manager and buyer.

Brewer led the clubs store chain for the past five years, during which time it made inroads into e-commerce and sought to attract more affluent customers from competitor Costco. She leaves without lining up her next endeavor, according to media reports. The SEC filing noted her retirement agreement includes a two-year non-compete clause.
