Mountaire Farms employees joined community volunteers on Tuesday in Selbyville, Delaware in packing and distributing 3,000 meal boxes for families at Easter.

“Everyone knows this pandemic has been so hard on so many, with businesses closing and people who were laid off from work people who have found themselves with food insecurity issues without even realizing they’d have that,” Mountaire’s Director of Communications and Community Relations Cathy Bassett said.

“I think everybody here knows there is a lot of need in our community, across the Shore,” Mountaire President Phil Plylar said at the event. “Whether it’s Christmas, Thanksgiving or now our Easter for Thousands today, because of your efforts, we are going to help our fellow folks here on the Shore. You are going to have a positive impact in helping a family in need here in our community. I can’t thank you enough for being here.”

“Without the volunteers, without the support of our community, this event wouldn’t be possible,” Mountaire Community Relations Manager Zach Evans said. “So we’re going to give families all across Delmarva the opportunity to have a warm Easter dinner.”

The event is the first of its kind that Mountaire has held for Easter, although it annually holds the Thanksgiving for Thousands event. Churches, non-profits and community groups partnered with Mountaire to handle the distribution of boxes to families. The meal included a Mountaire roaster, mashed potatoes with gravy, peas and carrots, corn and brownie mix.

Mountaire has donated nearly one million pounds of chicken to various groups over the course of the pandemic, Bassett said.
