Rep. Barry Moore (R-AL) and Rep. Jerry Carl (R-AL) will face each other in the election for Alabama’s 1st Congressional District next year.

A federal court earlier this month ordered Alabama to use a new map for the 2024 elections after the map used for the 2022 cycle was litigated.

Rep. Carl represents the current 1st district, while Rep. Moore represents the current 2nd district.

As of now, Alabama has just one Democrat member of Congress: Rep. Terri Sewell. With Reps. Moore and Carl set to run for the new 1st district,  the new map opens up a possible Democratic pickup in the new 2nd district. Polling shows that in 2020 President Joe Biden would have won the new 2nd district by 13 points, whereas he lost the 2nd district as it’s currently drawn by 29 points.

Rep. Moore serves on the Agriculture and Judiciary committees, while Carl sits on the Appropriations and Natural Resources committees. Both are in their second terms.
