The preliminary total live weight of all federally inspected poultry during November 2023 was 5.67 billion pounds, down three percent from 5.83 billion pounds a year ago.

Young chickens inspected totaled 5.03 billion pounds, down four percent from November 2022. Mature chickens, at 60.5 million pounds, were down six percent from the previous year.

Poultry certified wholesome during November 2023 (ready-to-cook weight) totaled 4.31 billion pounds, down three percent from the amount certified in November 2022. The October 2023 revised certified total at 4.74 billion pounds, was up three percent from October 2022. The October revision represented an increase of 7.97 million pounds from last month’s preliminary pounds certified.

Young chickens slaughtered during November 2023 averaged 6.61 pounds per bird, up one percent from November 2022. The average live weight of mature chickens was 6.96 pounds per bird, down one percent from a year ago. Ante-mortem condemnations during November 2023 totaled 11.8 million pounds. Condemnations were 0.21 percent of the live weight inspected, as compared with 0.22 percent a year earlier. Post-mortem condemnations, at 24.6 million pounds, were 0.57 percent of quantities inspected, as compared with 0.58 percent a year earlier.
