On August 22, 2024, USDA released its monthly poultry slaughter report. It indicated that the total ready-to-cook (RTC) weight was 4.56 billion pounds, an eight percent increase from August 2023.
The June 2024 revised certified total at 4.19 billion pounds, was down seven percent from June 2023. The June revision represented an increase of 8.85 million pounds from last month’s preliminary pounds certified.
The preliminary total live weight of all federally inspected poultry during July 2024 was 6.00 billion pounds, up eight percent from 5.55 billion pounds a year ago. Young chickens inspected totaled 5.38 billion pounds, up nine percent from July 2023. Mature chickens, at 69.6 million pounds, were down four percent from the previous year.
Young chickens slaughtered during July 2024 averaged 6.51 pounds per bird, up one percent from July 2023. The average live weight of mature chickens was 7.19 pounds per bird, down one percent from a year ago.
Ante-mortem condemnations during July 2024 totaled 13.7 million pounds. Condemnations were 0.23 percent of the live weight inspected, as compared with 0.24 percent a year earlier. Post-mortem condemnations, at 26.7 million pounds, were 0.58 percent of quantities inspected, as compared with 0.57 percent a year earlier.
