Government shutdown enters 24th day

The Senate has adjourned until Monday, prolonging the government shutdown for several more days. The chamber voted a 12th time earlier this week on the House-passed Republican short-term government spending bill, but the legislation again failed to advance without gaining more Democratic support.

The four-week month of September generated nearly $8.5 billion in meat department sales, according to the latest Performance Report from Circana, 210 Analytics, and Hillphoenix. This reflects inflationary gains as well as demand-driven growth. Pound sales increased 0.5% in September 2025. This increase was fully driven by fresh meat sales that increased 1.7% in September while processed meat sales were down 2.5%.

The North Carolina Poultry Federation (NCPF) held its annual meeting earlier this month at the Grandover Resort & Conference Center. This was the 58th Annual Meeting of the Federation and included the election of the 2025-2026 Board of Directors, an Awards Banquet honoring this year’s environmental award winners as well as retiring Executive Director Robert L. Ford.

NCC, in a letter this week sent to New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Morse, and Office of Food Policy Executive Director Kate MacKenzie, expressed serious concern about the recently announced New York City food standards that will prohibit “processed meats” in meals served by city agencies, including public schools.

The European Parliament (EP) this week voted to ban the use of words like “burger” or “steak” to describe their plant-based variants, according to the BBC and other media outlets.  The 355-247 majority vote is seen as a victory for livestock farmers who say the labels threaten their industry and livelihoods. A full ban, however, is not imminent – or even certain – as the proposal needs the backing of the European Commission – the EU’s executive arm – as well as the governments of the 27 member countries to become law.
