The U.S. poultry industry has invested US$2.7 billion in processing facility improvements over the past five years, with the majority targeting the further-processed sector, explained CoBank animal protein economist Brian Earnest at the 2025 Chicken Marketing Summit. These investments have focused primarily on upgrading existing facilities and adding new processing lines rather than expanding capacity by constructing new plants.

To kickoff the NFL season and September’s National Chicken Month, NCC, the Brewers Association, the Congressional and Senate Chicken Caucuses, and the Congressional and Senate Small Brewers Caucuses, hosted a bicameral Congressional reception yesterday in the historic Kennedy Caucus Room in the United States Senate. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) last week determined that more restrictive federal wastewater regulations and new cost burdens would be harmful for U.S. meat and poultry processing operations. The agency also concluded that the current system of federal, state and local requirements already in place under the Clean Water Act is working effectively.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said on Tuesday that the state’s new federal waiver banning soda, candy and energy drinks from SNAP purchases, and adding hot rotisserie chicken, is now official. In a video posted to Instagram, Landry held up the signed waiver and thanked President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins for approving the change. Local media also reported on the announcement.

USDA this week released its new farm income forecast. The department estimates average earnings for farm businesses will rise by 12% this year to $127,000 per operation. But that average income, which includes government payments as well as commodity sales, masks a lot of variation between types of farms.

A second state law banning cell-grown meat is being challenged in federal court. The Institute for Justice (IJ), in collaboration with startups Wildtype and UPSIDE Foods, is suing Texas in an effort to strike down the newly enacted ban on the sale of cultivated meat in the Lone Star State. IJ and UPSIDE Foods are also the plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Florida, which enacted a similar ban.
