Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack is slated to speak at the National Chicken Council’s 61st Annual Conference scheduled October 28-29 at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington, D.C. With the negotiations completed on the Trans-Pacific Partnership and USDA’s efforts regarding the avian influenza outbreak earlier this year, Secretary Vilsack’s remarks should be of great interest to participants at the conference.
Vilsack lives in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, with his wife Christie. They have two sons. He was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1992. In 1998, Vilsack narrowly won the Iowa governor general election and became the first Democrat to serve as Iowa governor in 30 years and only the fifth Democrat to hold the office in the 20th century. In 2002, he won his second term in office. In December 2008, President Barack Obama announced his choice of Vilsack as his nominee to be the 30th Secretary of Agriculture. The Senate confirmed Vilsack’s nomination for the position by unanimous consent in January 2009.
