USDA reported this week in its monthly slaughter report that the June 2024 ready-to-cook weight (poultry-certified wholesome) totaled 4.18 billion pounds, down seven percent from the amount certified in June 2023.

The preliminary total live weight of all federally inspected poultry during June 2024 was 5.52 billion pounds, down seven percent from 5.95 billion pounds a year ago. Young chickens inspected totaled 4.92 billion pounds, down six percent from June 2023. Mature chickens, at 67.7 million pounds, were down 11 percent from the previous year.

Young chickens slaughtered during June 2024 averaged 6.55 pounds per bird, up slightly from June 2023. The average live weight of mature chickens was 7.05 pounds per bird, up five percent from a year ago.

Ante-mortem condemnations during June 2024 totaled 12.2 million pounds. Condemnations were 0.22 percent of the live weight inspected, unchanged from a year earlier. Post-mortem condemnations, at 25.1 million pounds, were 0.60 percent of quantities inspected, as compared with 0.59 percent a year earlier.
