A possible federal government shutdown is only days away as congressional lawmakers remain at odds over funding the government beyond September 30. The House recently passed its version of a clean Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the government into November, but after weeks of negotiations, Republicans and Democrats appear to be no closer to reaching a resolution to keep the government open before the deadline hits next Wednesday. The House has recessed and negotiations are ongoing in the Senate.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins this week announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is proposing changes to strengthen the stocking requirements for retailers participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The department said these changes would protect the program, participants, and taxpayers by mitigating fraud, waste, and abuse and ensuring additional healthy food options for recipient families.

USDA will hold two sessions next week to hear from stakeholders on the shortage of rural veterinarians. The events are from 3-4 p.m. on Sept. 29 and Sept. 30. To register, go here. USDA recently released a strategy to address the lack of rural vets, a longstanding problem caused in part by the high cost of veterinary school.

The Animal Agriculture Alliance, of which NCC is a member, this week announced the theme of its 2026 Stakeholders Summit: High Steaks: Navigating Pressure on Animal Protein. Speaking proposals that fit the theme will be accepted through November 14, 2025 and can be submitted here. The 2026 event is scheduled for May 5-7 in Kansas City, Mo. Registration will open in January.

NCC this week provided comments to the Department of Justice’s (DOJ’s) Request for Information (RFI) regarding state laws that significantly and adversely affect the national economy or interstate commerce. NCC is pleased that DOJ is considering actions in response to state laws and regulations that hamper economic growth and hold back the American economy. Eliminating costly regulations and reforming misguided policy will directly reduce costs, drive efficiency, and advance the Administration’s goals of unlocking lower prices for American consumers and unleashing American agriculture.
