Broiler-type chicks hatched during August 2023 totaled 852 million, down two percent from the previous year.
Eggs in incubators totaled 716 million on September 1, 2023, down two percent from a year ago. Leading breeders placed 8.24 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during August 2023, up seven percent from August 2022.
Total layers in the United States on September 1, 2023 totaled 386 million, up three percent from last year. The 386 million layers consisted of 318 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 63.6 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 3.75 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. Rate of lay per day on September 1, 2023, averaged 78.4 eggs per 100 layers, down one percent from September 1, 2022.
United States egg production totaled 9.38 billion during August 2023, up two percent from last year. Production included 8.06 billion table eggs, and 1.32 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.23 billion were broiler-type and 94.9 million were eggtype.
